Welcome to Year 1
We would like to welcome you all to the Year 1 class page. The Year 1 teaching team includes Mrs McGrath (Class Teacher) and Mrs Hyland (Teaching Assistant). This term we are also joined by Associate Teacher Miss Heartfield, who works with us four days a week.
The children in Year 1 enjoy a varied and exciting curriculum with lots of continuous provision and creative activities. We work very hard to ensure that the transition from Reception to Year 1 is smooth and successful. In the autumn term the class has lots of continuous provision opportunities for the children, these are related to our topics and enhanced to provide them with a variety of different learning experiences.
Throughout the year these opportunities change and adapt to match the new national curriculum expectations for the Year 1 children. The children are introduced to a more formal style of learning, when they are ready, and participate in daily mathematics and literacy lessons. Our literacy provision includes lots of phonics work, which builds on your child’s previous knowledge and understanding.
Our topics are varied and cover a wide range of areas, we listen carefully to the children to make these lessons exciting and interesting. We also like the children to contribute their own ideas of the topics they would like to cover throughout the year.
We have a strong link with our parents and communicate weekly through the class homework letter. These are emailed home and we welcome ideas and comments from parents about their child’s progress and ways in which we can improve and enhance our work in school.
We aim to provide a safe and secure learning environment within our classroom which supports and encourages the learning and development of every child. But most importantly we aim to have as much fun as possible!
